“Howard Prep is wonderful for DJ — and wonderful for us. He’s safe here. He has purpose.” - Melba Y., parent of Howard Prep consumer
Recently, the State of California passed Senate Bill 693, which raises the state minimum wage in 2025. While for many this can be seen as a blessing, the bill hurts those with developmental disabilities who rely on program's like Howard Prep's Community Employment, Culinary and Landscaping services to have a job, which gives our consumers a sense of purpose.
This bill will essentially eliminate all jobs we can place our consumers. The increase to standard minimum wage will negatively impact our ability to offer these services.
We need your help to keep our clients busy, productive and happy.
“All these happy, busy people are going to be challenged to no end” in January 2025, said Carla Strong, Howard Prep’s executive director. That’s when SB 639 takes effect, outlawing the compensation structure currently paying 6,087 disabled people working for 80 entities throughout California."
Please consider a monthly, ongoing donation to Howard Prep. Your support will help us offset our growing costs, and support advocacy efforts to keep our consumers working.
